To honour the promise the king made to the brahmin, 'Mahabali' requested 'Vamana' to place the third step on his head thus pushing him down to Patala, the kingdom beneath the earth. However, Lord Vishnu was pleased with the king and accepted the king's request that he be allowed to visit Kerala once in a year from his kingdom below. This day of visit of King 'Mahabali' to Kerala is celebrated as Onam every year!
